What Is Your Motivation To Seek New Employment

What Is Your Motivation To Seek New Employment One of my LinkedIn contacts, Marianna Fichtenholtz, asked me a question on LinkedIn that Ive thought about for the last week: If you were a job seeker, how would you answer the following question: What is your primary motivation to seek new employment? My first thought was to make money again.   When I was a job seeker it was not by choice, and my funds were drying up. But all week Ive batted this around, and come up with a few other ideas: To make MORE money. Some companies or titles or jobs or career paths or industries might offer me more money if I switch. Because Im done here. An executive might have accomplished what he/she came to do, or in my case, there wasnt anything more to learn (which was the reason I transitioned out of one of my first jobs).   If youve reached the end, and youll know it before you get there, then perhaps its time to look. To find something more secure. JibberJobber users are pretty savvy they realize nothing is totally secure, but some things can be more secure that what they have now. To find something more aligned with your values. Whether your values are aligned with tree huggers, liberals, conservatives, ultra-conservatives if the company you work for isnt congruent or tolerant or conducive to your values, you might find it taxing to go to work each day. To escape HELL. Been there.   Done that.   Its better to move on than stay. To do something with a purpose. In one company I did cool stuff but the company wasnt necessarily doing anything life-changing in the world.   I didnt think Id care, but when I started JibberJobber and really started affecting individuals lives, WOW, Im hooked on having a job that has a purpose. Let me throw this out to you what is (or has been) YOUR primary motivation to seek new employment? Roger Federer and Personal Branding - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Roger Federer and Personal Branding - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In Wimbledon 2008, Roger Federer found himself down to Rafael Nadal 2 sets to none.   Roger was playing for his 6th Wimbledon title in a row; Rafael was playing for his first either way, history was going to be made. Roger was winded, discouraged, and it seemed like a 2 sets to none lead was impossible to overcome.   During a break, Rogers trainer turns to the champion and says, Remember who you are. Those simple words were enough to motivate Roger to rally back to a five-set, five hour marathon of a match where he ended up losing to Rafael.   Yes, this post might have been a little more exciting if Roger had one, but I cant change history. The point is that Roger has a personal brand. He is known as the God of tennis, an unstoppable force of nature, especially on the Wimbledon court.   In his moment of desperation, all he had to do was simply remember who he was (his personal brand) to reinvigorate himself and start playing like a champion once again. What does this mean for you? If you have been building your personal brand successfully, then you are able to leverage it to motivate yourself when youre feeling down or when all hope is lost. A clear example in the business world is my partner Yu-kai Chou.   When the company cant close a client, doesnt reach a milestone, or fails to raise capital, it can be a very stressful time for all the team members.   In these moments, Yu-kai can choose to stress with all of the other team members, or remember who he is: an emotionally stable, holistically thinking, self-sacrificing CEO. Yu-kai has branded himself as a leader who puts his team first and his personal needs at a far second.   When the company feels stressed, it would be selfish of him to show his stress because that would just put the rest of the company in a more nervous state.   All Yu-kai needs to do is remember the personal brand that he has been building all these years, and fulfill that personal brand to take the right actions and put the company on the right course. What kind of personal brand are you building? Its great to build a personal brand as an expert in fashion, smurfs, or even ball point pens.   You can be an expert in anything, and I encourage you to build your expertise in a subject. But dont forget that a personal brand encompasses much more than an expertise on a topic. Your personal brand is your mannerisms, the way you compose yourself under stress, the way you lead, and the way you treat people. Roger built a personal brand as a cool, calm, and collected tennis player that never loses his composure on the court.   Because of this, he didnt stress when he faced what looked like the impossible. Yu-kai built a personal brand as an emotionally stable leader that puts his team first.   Because of this, he doesnt stress when times are tough for the company. You may be building your personal brand as an expert on a topic, but what about the rest of your personality and the way you compose yourself?   You must think about your personal brand as a holistic strategy that encompasses your mind, body, and profession. Big Girl, Big Attitude

Big Girl, Big Attitude Yesterday, Sports Illustrated made a historic statement by releasing their first magazine that features plus sized model Ashley Graham. She is officially the first plus sized model to appear in Sports Illustrated. She rocked a bikini with her size 14 physique, and it’s gorgeous. I think it’s her unadulterated self-confidence that truly made her shine. Dressing for your plus sized body shape can be a challenge, but it is much easier when you are confident and open to trying on an outfit. Don’t let shyness get ahead of you! There are many trendy plus size clothing options available to you; all you need are the basic tricks to get you into the right ones. Fit is everything. If you hide it or flaunt it too much, you’d look frumpy and/or inappropriate. Layers and oversized clothes will only make you look bigger! Go for a comfortable fit. Neither too tight nor loose. Make sure you are wearing the right underwear. Make sure you’re not showing any unsightly lumps from a tight brassier! Prints and Accessories are your friends. Once again, moderation is key. If you find a half point between tiny prints and loud ones, you have a winner. Same goes for accessories. If you are pear shaped, a statement belt should not take up too much space on your tummy area, as it calls for attention on that body part. Put your accessory on your neck or wrist instead. Know your best and worst features. What do you like and don’t like about yourself? Which are the bigger parts and smaller parts? If you know which is which, you will have an easier time dressing up. Downplay a prominent area of your body to look leaner. Don’t like your tummy? Hide it by buying color blocking dresses with dark colors in the center. At the end of the day, it really is all about how you feel about yourself. Let me quote Ashley here: I think that you can be healthy at any size and my goal is to help and educate women on that,” she wrote. It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 2 or 22 as long as you’re taking care of your body, working out, and telling yourself, ‘I love you’ instead of taking in the negativity of beauty standards. Are you a big girl with big attitude? Tell us all about how you dress to complement your body! Ready to go shopping for some new looks? Tips to Prepare You for Your Big Job Interview

Tips to Prepare You for Your Big Job Interview Job interviews are stressful events. Even if you feel well-prepared and suitable for the role, it’s hard not to feel the pressure leading up to the big day. Being in a good frame of mind can often impact on your chances of performing well in front of the panel. So, however nervous you are, make sure you have everything in order ahead of interview day.   Here are some greats tips to prepare you for your dream job interview, enjoy!   Do Your Research   The first building block you need to put in place when you’re preparing for your job interview is research. There’s no point following the rest of these tips if you don’t know the role you’re applying for inside out.   It’s not just the role you need to know either. You should make sure you fully understand what the company does and how the wider industry in which they operate works. This can take a lot of time, but it needs to be done.   Make Sure it’s the Right Fit   You need to have followed the previous tip before you follow this one. Once your research is complete, you need to make sure the role is the right one for you. When you’re searching for a new job, you often apply for a lot of jobs without really looking at what they entail in depth.   But there’s no point attending the interview if you don’t think you’d be able or willing to take on the role. It doesn’t happen often, but some people take jobs only to realise they made the wrong decision very quickly.   Look the Part   Most job interviews will require you to look smart and professional. So, dig out that suit, smarten up your hair and pluck your eyebrows! Whether at-home hair removal methods are permanent or temporary doesn’t matter. Just make sure you look good for the interview, even if it’s just for a few hours.   Your dress should be as smart as possible. Clean your shows and don’t turn up with your shirt untucked. That kind of thing can destroy the chance of a good first impression.   Find Out How the Interview Will Work   These days, there are all sorts of forms a job interview can take. And knowing how the interview will be conducted is important for getting your preparation right.   You could be asked to undertake a practical assessment to see if you’re capable of undertaking the role. Or you might be asked to make a presentation. Some employers even like to hold group interview with a lot of candidates at once.   Prepare Answers   The most common kind of interview though will consist of you sitting in front of a panel and answering the questions as they’re fired at you.   If you’re ill-prepared, this can be incredibly intimidating and can go horribly wrong. Make sure you prepare a set of likely questions you’ll be asked and then prepare your answers. Although it’s hard to know exactly what you’ll be asked, a lot of questions are repetitious. You can read the interview questions in books like  [amazon template=productasin=1440536791]   Try Not to Drop Any Clangers It’s hard to mitigate against freak accidents, but keeping calm and trying not to say anything stupid could be the difference between a disaster and a success.

The Reality of Working in a Call Centre - How2Become.com

The Reality of Working in a Call Centre - How2Become.com What is a Call Centre?Call centres are basically centres where large volumes of customer queries or customer support requirement can be dealt with. It may also be a centralised location from which telesales operations can take place. Companies like SERCO for example provide and manage call centres all across the globe in a variety of different industries. Their website provides more information regarding SERCO contact centre operations and jobs.Call centre work usually involves customer queries and support, providing technical support to customers, making sales or telemarketing, offering information and guidance about existing products etc.Depending on the type of work involved, workers could have specific performance targets to meet as part of the job.all centres usually have a workstation for every worker with a computer at each work station. Employees can access relevant information about customers on the company’s database, depending on the type of service they are providing.Ca ll centre workers usually deal directly with customers over the phone, so some essential skills and qualities needed for the job are good communication skills, good telephone manner, good personal management skills and a high level of self-confidence.Since the work usually involves dealing with a computer, workers also need to have a certain level of IT skills.Basic pay for call centre jobs usually within sales or customer service can be around £12,000 with an hourly rate of just above minimum wage.Management positions can draw around £18,000 â€" £25,000 per year, but specific salaries will obviously depend on the role and the company. Are Call Centres the Modern Day Working Mill?Call centres have often been the target of satire and social commentary in recent times. Even as the manufacturing industry seems to be shrinking, the service industry has stepped up and filled its place, sometimes even literally. After all, what better use is there for old mills than as office space for call centres? While the manufacturing sector in the UK contributed 40% of the jobs in the nation, until after the Second World War, the figure today is vastly lower. But even as we delegate our manufacturing to a certain part of the world, the service industry seems to be booming in the UK, and indeed around the world. Call centres seem to have sprung up everywhere, and just like the mills once represented the industrial and manufacturing revolution, they represent the new revolution. So why is there a comparison between call centres, or contact centres as they are known within the industry, and working mills? This is because of the ‘assembly line’ approach taken by the service industry towards customer service centres; and secondly, because of the alleged realities of working in a call centre.Who in their right mind would like to make cold calls to people and try to sell things? Well, that is what telemarketers have to do. And just like mill workers, they have targets to meet â€" hourly targets, weekly targets and monthly targets. Disturbing people at their homes and workplace, trying to sell them things they don’t want or need and being scrutinised and assessed at every stage of the process is what telemarketing work basically entails. As for contact centres taking incoming calls from customers, the story only get worse. Most people deem calling up a call centre one of the most stress-inducing activities in their life. But if it is stressful for callers, how stressful might it be for those who are physically answering the calls, and trying to deal with problems they are probably not equipped to deal with? Simply because they have to meet a certain target. What is The Future For Call Centres?Until not so long ago, the aim of incoming phone call centres was to get as many phone calls processed as possible. This meant that each employee had a certain target to meet. However, the industry soon realised the pitfalls of having a customer service system which doe sn’t allow time for any customer service. The truth is that call centres have earned a notorious reputation of being no better than factory farms of human beings with a script to read from. But this reputation has been earned over the years, during which time the service industry has striven to change its ways. Today, the industry is making efforts to change the way contact centres are run and managed and trying to evolve efficient systems that cater to the customer, as well as save the companies money. However, the main aim of setting up call centres is for companies to save money. It is all about getting what needs to be done at the cheapest price. This basic premise dictates that call centres will never be able to provide a whole lot more than the bare minimum for their employees or indeed for the customers.Working for a call centre can be hard work, and there are certainly reasons why it has gained a bad reputation. It cannot be denied however that contact centres have created j obs for a lot of groups in society today. Temporary positions are especially useful for those trying to get their foot in the door and can set workers up with an array of transferable skills for future positions. Although the work may not be for everyone, it cannot be denied that it is a big part of today’s consumer society. This entry was posted in News. Bookmark the permalink. 3 Ways to Get Your Career Off to a Great Start This Year

3 Ways to Get Your Career Off to a Great Start This Year How has the New Year started out for you? I’m asking because I’ve always found this to be an exciting time of year. One where each of us can make a fresh start. Where a whole new world lies ahead and there’s everything to play for. Like untouched snow or turning to a fresh page in my journal. My year is starting out with excitement about a project my team and I have been working on for months which we’re about to announce â€" more on that later! But back to the start of your year… Whether you’re off to a roaring start, feeling underwhelmed, or something in between, this is a natural time to do some thinking and planning for the year ahead. And as my father says, “chance favors the prepared mind.” While having a strategy in place is important for achieving big goals, it can feel daunting to do that preparation. It’s tempting to put it off until “later” or to ditch the idea altogether in favor of “winging it”. Both are suboptimal if you want to have a great year. Since I want you to have an awesome year, I’d like to share with you some super simple ways to set yourself up for success without spending lots of time or spinning your wheels. Here are three things you can do right now to get your career off to a great start in the new year. And you’re not alone. I’m putting these to use as well. 1. Choose Your Theme for the Year This can be an overarching theme that will sustain you through the year, like a touchstone. For example, it could be “the year of the promotion” or “the year of getting your degree.” Or it could be “the year of living dangerously,” which is the name of a movie. You can also choose a set of words or phrases that really embody the theme you want to live out for the year, such as “let’s make everything simple, easy and fun this year. In my case, I'm going to choose staying focused as my theme. One of the big lessons I learned this past year was the need to get and stay focused. I think it's going to be a big challenge, but I can't wait to tackle it. 2. Identify the Three Big Wins You Want to Have This Year The second thing to think about are your wins. In fact, I want you to pre-determine and pre-select the three big wins that you want to have this year. They can be any three things. It could be a combination of landing three new clients, passing an exam you need to pass in order to get to the next level of your career (e.g., the CFA or CPA exams), and maybe the third one is getting over your fear of speaking by giving a big talk. In my case, my three big wins that I’m pre-determining for this year are: (1 & 2) nailing the two big projects that my team and I have been working on for the last six months, and then (3) developing a platform that's going to allow us to serve even more people with greater value. So, think about what your three big wins are going to be. It's a more energizing way of asking yourself, what are my three big goals for the year? Ask yourself, “What are my three big wins going to be this year?” It's a more energizing way of asking, what are my three big goals for the year? 3. Decide What Investment You’re Going to Make in Yourself Think about how you’re going to invest in yourself this year. Think about which exact things you're going to spend your time, energy, mind-space and money on this year to build your foundation and make you even better in new dimensions. For me, I’m going to reinvest in the mastermind groups that I'm part of. Initially I wasn't sure I was going to re-up my investment, but now I realize these are foundational to my current success and my future success. What are your investments going to be? 4. Bonus Thing to Get Your Career off to a Great Start This Year There's a special fourth thing that I'm going to make available to you very soon to help you further in getting your career off to a great start.
